Notes:

Following David's adultery with Bathsheba and the birth of the child, the prophet Nathan confronts David.  David does not at first recognise that he is the subject of Nathan's parable, and effectively pronounces judgment on himself.  God, however, shows Himself to be forgiving and merciful - a God of grace, - but He nevertheless tells David that there will be consequences that follow from his sin.

We are reminded that Jesus has taken the punishment for all our sins, and we do not have to take punishment for the same sin a second time.  Nevertheless, we may very well have to suffer the consequences of what we have done, and those consequences are determined by God.
