Notes:

Although David had lived in constant danger from Saul, David always refused to see Saul as an enemy and always sought to honour him as God's anointed King.  After Saul and three of his sons had been killed in battle, we might have expected David to rejoice because the danger to his life had now gone.  In fact, David was distressed and poured out his heart in mourning.

We are challenged by David's attitude to those who opposed him so strongly.  Jesus says to us that we are to love our enemies, do good to those who hate us, bless those who curse us and pray for those who abuse us.  This is not a legalistic command, but obedience becomes possible for us through the power of the Holy Spirit living in us.
